Mainly out of boredom and a little bit of curiosity I watched this year’s Piranha from director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, High Tension). The plot is very similar to Jaws — an island town becomes invested with partying college kids during Spring Break. And an underwater quake opens the water’s bottom to another subterranean lake full of hungry piranhas.
Elisabeth Shue plays the town’s sheriff Julie. She has to balance warning/saving the unassuming drunk partiers with worrying about her three kids. Jerry O’Connell plays Derrick Jones — the equivalent of Joe Francis, creator of Girls Gone Wild. He pays the sheriff’s son Jake (Steven McQueen, “The Vampire Diaries”) to lead his boat adventure. And of course they get stranded and lots of flesh festing ensues. At the same time there was a romance element because Jake is crushing on Kelly (Jessica Szohr, “Gossip Girl”) and bravely saves her.
The film was pretty good at being atmospheric. I liked the piranha’s look — they had nasty sharp teeth and the lighting was always really dark so it was creepier once we did get glance at them. The film was gorey, and I mean really gorey. But the pacing was actually kind of slow, there were a few stretched out attacking scenes but other than that the film was boring. I wouldn’t recommend the film, even for a cheesy horror laugh.
