A couple days ago I went to see Iron Man 2 and it definitely lived up to my expectations. The film was a great continuation of the first movie and leads in perfectly to 2012’s The Avengers. I had no idea Jon Favreau directed this film until the beginning credits, and was surprised to learn he’s actually directed a lot of popular movies, i.e. Iron Man and Elf. He also has a little cameo in the Iron Man films. It was cool to find out Favreau is more than just typecasted to the roles he had in Four Christmases and Couple’s Retreat.
I won’t go too into plot because everyone likely knows what this film is about. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) continues his reign as Iron Man while the government bares down on him trying to gain possession of the suit. Stark gets the help of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Not sure if all my comic books facts are correct, forgive me). A Russian physicist Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke) is the main villian and tries to kill Iron Man by creating a mock suit.
Other characters were Col. Rhodes (Don Cheadle) who goes behind Stark’s back to help the government. He eventually regrets that move and comes back around to Tony. Pepper Potts was still played by Gwyneth Paltrow and was a very flat, weak character. Sam Rockwell (Matchstick Men) plays Justin Hammer, a rival in the super power suit business. He was a funny character because he was always three steps behind Stark.
So as you can see the film was chock full of new and existing characters. But the film was long enough (over two hours) that it didn’t become overwhelming. I recommend staying through the credits for a little teaser. Downey Jr. is hands down the best actor to fill the shoes of Iron Man. The viewer gets more depth into Stark in this film, he is very depressed, an alcoholic and we get back story on his father, which is a very important part of the movie. I was suprised by how much I liked Johansson’s character. Originally I didn’t want to see her in an action flick because to me she’s the total opposite but she didn’t do too bad. She is slated to be in The Avengers alongside Jackson, Downey Jr., Cheadle, Chris Evans, Ed Norton, Lou Ferrigno, etc.
