A couple of days ago I watched the 1995 film Mallrats written and directed by Kevin Smith. I’ve been a fan of Smith’s since I saw Clerks and Clerks II. Mallrats was really silly, funny and had a great slew of actors. This was only his second film after Clerks in 1994.

The movie is about two best friend TS (Jeremy London) and Brodie (Jason Lee). They are both dumped by their girlfriends Brandi (Claire Forlani) and Rene (Shannen Doherty). Most of the movie takes place at the local mall. TS and Brodie try to get their girlfriends back. In the meantime the get into lots of trouble and interact with lots of characters along the way.

Ben Affleck plays a douche who tries to sleep with Rene. Joey Lauren Adams from Big Daddy plays Brandi’s good friend. She was great in this film and is as cute as ever. Of course, Kevin Smith plays Silent Bob and Jason Mewes is there as the stoned Jay. Famed comic book creator Stan Lee plays himself in the movie. Each of these small roles added to the film a lot. It was really cool to see these actors in less serious roles. Does anyone remember Terri from “Three’s Company?” Even she’s in this movie and plays a three-nippled psychic.

Jason Lee’s character was a complete moron but would occasionally say something really smart or insightful. He and London worked great in this film as best friends. It was hilarious to watch their adventures together. Also, I’m not a huge fan of Doherty’s since “Beverly Hills, 90210” but she was good in this film. She was actually normal. Affleck’s character didn’t have much depth and was a complete jerk. But he did a good job playing the role. Ethan Suplee (“My Name is Earl” and The Butterfly Effect) had an extremely small part but it was really funny.

  1. I love this movie. It’s a dumb concept, but it works. Smith always has a knack for making silly storylines, with a good cast, work.
