While watching TV I came across the movie Friends With Money. The 2006 flick was written and directed by Nicole Holofcener. While Holofcener’s resume may be small, it’s mighty. She’s directed episodes of “Bored to Death” (Very funny show, by the way), “Sex and the City” and “Six Feet Under” (forever my favorite show). The movie was surprisingly good. I had always seen it at the store but never got around to renting it.
The plotline is about a group of three married couples and a single woman who are good friends. Each couple has their ups and downs. Whether it was dealing with depression, closeted gays, a hard time being employed, or divorce there were some big picture issues addressed in this film. But what was good about the movie was a balance of lightheartedness as well. There were really funny moments in the character’s lives and interactions.
The cast was packed with quality actors. Catherine Keener (The 40 Year Old Virgin), Jason Isaacs (from the Harry Potter series), Joan Cusack, Frances McDormand and Jennifer Aniston all played leading characters. It was definitely an ensemble cast, with Aniston getting slightly more camera time. All of these actors have a lot of experience under their belts and are able to portray relatable characters. Overall the movie is ‘deep’ without being draining. It’s serious but has a lot of comedic, sweet elements too.
